If you've tried countless fancy serums and salon treatments to have your hair feel alive and healthy but still haven't seen actual results, the problem might lie somewhere else.
Most of us living in the cities hardly ever stop to wonder about the quality of water that's being used to wash our hair regularly. It's a practice that is still new to many but given the amount of water pollution in current times, we need to adopt it quickly.
What exactly has been collecting inside your shower taps?
Persistence of hard water in India has been a growing concern that has become the subject of many research studies. It's the silent saboteur in every shower, especially in Indian cities where TDS levels skyrocket.
According to the Bureau of Indian Standard, water having the value of total dissolved solid greater than 500 ppm may be moderately hard or hard and this water can affect the human health on continuous consumption for a long time. Basically, hard water is water that's loaded with calcium, magnesium, chlorine and other minerals that can coat your hair strands and block any nourishment from going in no matter how hard you try. It creates this mineral build up on your scalp which makes your hair extremely vulnerable to breakage, frizz, hair fall, dryness and dullness. You will notice that your hair has become prematurely grey, stiff, rough and your scalp has become subject to itchiness and dandruff.
All of this can be caused by the mere quality of your water. Insane, right?
The Proof
You can check your water taps for residue by uncorking the regular filter. Mostly, it will look like mud and minute dirt, but further lab tests into it will reveal the presence of hard minerals and damaging chemicals.
What Can You Do?
- Opt for filtered or RO water (low TDS under 100) because it lathers better, preserves shine and lets products penetrate without residue.
- Rainwater or boiled & cooled tap water also mimics soft water's gentleness.
- Clean your water taps monthly with vinegar to remove the grime.
- Add an advanced shower filter that eliminates chlorine and softens the water.
Haircare in itself is not complicated but we must always keep in mind the various factors that could impact it negatively.
